Vicinity Manufacturing was founded in 2001 with the goal of building a manufacturing system written specifically for and to serve only process, or “formula-based”, manufacturers, rather than a modified discrete/assembly manufacturing system. The efforts of our three founders were based on a strong belief that, for years, process manufacturers had been under-served by software companies. Existing solutions only partially understood the market and leveraged technologies that had grown old with the times. Our solution was designed with the most appropriate technologies available and engineered to foster growth as technologies evolve. This refreshing contrast to the old approach has helped Vicinity become the new standard for formula manufacturing software.
Each founder brought tremendous industry experience to Vicinity’s design and development, and both Randy Smith and Seth Abady continue to drive the company’s success today. Here’s a bit of background on each of these leaders.
Randy Smith, Co-Founder & CEO
Randy expanded the experiences gained growing up in a manufacturing and small business ownership family by receiving a degree in Finance & Computer Science from the University of Arkansas, then sitting for and passing the CPA exam. He entered the public accounting industry with tremendous training and business experience with Arthur Andersen & Co., as well as Deloitte & Touche, as an auditor and later systems consultant. It was here that he first gained expertise working in manufacturing. Upon leaving public accounting, he opened a consulting firm dedicated to providing business and systems consulting to formula-based manufacturers.
As the dominant software application leader in formula-based manufacturing, Batchmaster, began to fade off into history, he co-founded Vicinity Manufacturing to address the critical business issues in the formula manufacturing industries for small to mid-sized manufacturers. As CEO, Randy continues to use his industry experience and insights working directly with clients from initial consultation through implementation and training. Our customers constantly emphasize that Randy’s expertise and involvement throughout the process of choosing a software solution are what gives Vicinity the edge over our competition.
Seth Abady, Co-Founder & Director of Development
With a degree in Computer Science from San Diego State University, the earlier days of Seth’s career were spent writing the original BatchMaster software. Ultimately leaving their company as VP of Development once that product began to experience a multitude of transformations and numerous changes in ownership, Seth had spent well over a decade intimately learning the process manufacturing industry. This led him to establish Vicinity Manufacturing with Randy Smith, and fellow co-founder turned consultant, Paul Silvani.
Taking his now 30+ years’ experience engineering and developing software for the manufacturing market, Seth forms the framework for Vicinity. As Director of Development, he utilizes .NET and Microsoft Dynamics technologies to provide seamless integrations to the Microsoft Dynamics GP, SL, and NAV enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications. Seth also uses the feedback received directly from our clients to continuously upgrade Vicinity and convert customer requirements into software functionality, with new releases occurring quarterly.
Jennifer Sweat, Lead Technical Support Consultant
Born and raised in Virginia, Jennifer attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (“Virginia Tech”) as a Presidential Scholar where she graduated with a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering before moving to Philadelphia, PA to take a job with Ernst & Young in their Management Consulting group.
After leaving Philadelphia, Jennifer worked as an Independent Consultant while she and her husband David moved to Olean, NY and Lexington, KY before settling in Atlanta, GA. She worked for a logistics company before joining the team at Randy’s software consulting firm back in 2000. After two kids and a (FINAL) move back home to Virginia, she continues to work for Vicinity as our Lead Technical Support Consultant. Jennifer’s in-depth knowledge of accounting and systems analysis also makes her a great ‘Vicinity Boot Camp’ instructor at our annual software users conference called “FOCUS”. When not taking support calls and working with clients, she enjoys reading, music, and spending time at Smith Mountain Lake.
